The lecture Daniël van der Velden presented at the Design Blast conference is now online.
“(...) The designer who wakes up on an early morning in the 21st century knows that his human capital, creativity and labour are the last reserve of the western economies.
Or, to put it differently: you don't get out of bed to go to work. You cannot go to work, because you are your work. And since you already are your work you can be nowhere where there isn't also your work.
At the moment of the 'design blast', the 'big bang' of design in the 21st century, we the designers are becoming the key producers of value of all sorts. Design blast implies that the collateral damage is everywhere at the same time, so that everywhere there is design and the way it operates is uncontrolled and inconsistent. (...)”

The word „blast“, meaning “shock wave” or “detonation”, is also a slang word for having a fantastic time. With the title Design Blast, the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe is staging a one-day conference with the aim of making entertaining, provocative and promising design trends visible. Altogether six young speakers who, stand at the beginning of their careers, will show what new directions and trends can be expected in the future. In his video Alarm Dance, the British artist Daniel Eatock, will present dance performances to the irritating sound of car alarms. The Italian Elio Caccavale will show what possibilities biotechnology offers for design. Also contributing will be the German graphic designer Mario Lombardo, Jan Wilker from New York, as well as the British product designer Richard Sweeny and Daniël van der Velden from the Netherlands. The conference is curated by Petra Schmidt, who works as a freelance writer and design consultant in Frankfurt. Petra Schmidt studied theater, film and media sciences and was editor-in-chief of the magazine “form” from 1999 to 2007. This visionary conference, which will take place on May 23, 2008, in the atrium of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, is admission free for visitors, but space is limited.
